Overseas Taiwanese School Status:

According to Article 3 of the “Guidelines for Supporting and Connecting Overseas Taiwanese Schools” issued by the Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan):

“Any overseas school that aligns with the values of our government may apply for official registration after establishment by submitting the 'Current Status Form of Overseas Taiwanese School' (see appendix), school charter or related regulations, principal’s CV, class schedule, etc., through the local ROC embassy or Overseas Education and Cultural Center, to be forwarded to the OCAC for record. Any changes in organization or discontinuation of operations must also be reported in the same manner.”

Qualifications for Overseas Taiwanese Students (OCAC Students):

A student must meet certain criteria to be eligible for Overseas Taiwanese Student (僑生) status and benefit from related educational privileges in Taiwan.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Residence Duration Abroad:
    The student must be born and have continuously lived overseas until the present, or have resided abroad continuously for at least 6 years.
    ➤ For applicants to medical, dental, or traditional Chinese medicine programs, the required period is 8 years or more.

  • Ethnic Chinese Heritage:
    The applicant must be of Chinese descent.

  • Eligibility Timeline:
    The period of residence is usually calculated backward from the application deadline — 6 years (or 8 years) before that date.

  • Other Requirements:
    In addition to the above, certain departments or universities may require:

    • Chinese language proficiency,

    • Specific academic qualifications,

    • Age restrictions, etc.


In summary:

To apply to schools in Taiwan as an Overseas Taiwanese Student, applicants must meet both:

  • residency requirements, and

  • Chinese heritage
    — and complete the application procedures accordingly. Once recognized, students can enjoy preferential admission policies and academic support in Taiwan.
